The backing of Alliance For London, known as being a haven for ex-Conservative supporters angry at their former party’s cavalier attitude to the UK’s international relations and Brexit, indicates growing cross-party support for Hewison's stated aim in Uxbridge of appealing to voters of the two main parties estranged by their support for Brexit.
This comes less than a week after Volt UK, traditionally regarded as a young-led centre-to-centre-left pro-EU party, also backed the Rejoin EU Party candidate.
Alliance For London leader Dirk Hazell said: “The Conservative Party that took us into Europe had Britain's best interest at heart. The Conservative Party that took us out of Europe put non-dom billionaires before Britain’s future. Their ultra-hard Brexit is damaging Uxbridge & South Ruislip and should be reversed as soon as possible to help to restore local living standards.”
Hewison said: “I am delighted to have the support of Alliance for London in this campaign. We've been pursuing mainly disillusioned Labour supporters in Uxbridge, but I think this demonstrates people across the political spectrum are seeing the damage Brexit is doing to the UK and want to turn the tide. We welcome all supporters who formerly backed the Conservative Party and can assure them we at least are listening to them.”
Rejoin EU campaigners have received a warm welcome from many voters in doorstep conversations, particularly those worried about the cost-of-living crisis and rising mortgages/rents, the link with Brexit being palpably clear. Anyone wanting to tell the party what they think about Brexit, or who would like to volunteer their help in any way, can do so at therejoineuparty.com/take-the-survey
Well done all.
