Rejoin EU Party to target pro-EU votes in Runcorn & Helsby by-election

There are votes to be had from backing the UK re-joining the EU and the Rejoin EU Party will target them in the impending Runcorn & Helsby by-election, the party said at its first annual conference at the weekend.

Rejoin EU represents the views of many millions of British electors who already want to re-join the EU and this number is rising constantly as voters see how Brexit is damaging the British economy and the UK’s standing in the world, party leader Brendan Donnelly told supporters at the conference in central London on Saturday.

All the major British parties have let down the electorate in their approach to the European issue, Donnelly said. The Reform and Conservative parties claim Brexit hasn’t been properly implemented, the Labour Party continues to chase the delusion of “making Brexit work” and the Greens and Liberal Democrats theoretically favour re-joining the EU, but don’t appear to regard it as urgent. Only the Rejoin EU Party recognises the necessity of starting now the process that would lead to the UK re-joining.

“It’s four or five years until the next general election,” Donnelly told the conference. “In that time, our party will look to stand in as many elections as possible, starting with the Runcorn & Helsby by-election. Runcorn will be a good opportunity for the electorate to send a pro-European message to Westminster. We want to show the bigger parties there are votes to be gained from a pro-EU stance and votes to be lost from being anti-EU.

“We’re not ashamed to be compared with UKIP in its early days, seeking to put pressure on other parties to adopt a new policy on Europe. The difference is, we’re pushing for a policy that will bring great benefit to the whole country, while UKIP were peddling a European policy that has helped very few voters and greatly harmed many.”

Concluding his opening speech, Donnelly said: “Our message and mission are clear. We want to re-join the EU as quickly as possible. The best way for us to make politicians from other parties sit up and take notice is to compete with them for votes. I’m sure that over the coming years, we will give a good account of ourselves. I don’t believe Keir Starmer’s present equivocal stance on Europe can survive the economic and political storms bearing down on our country. It’s clear that the UK must now choose between an authoritarian Trumpian America and our democratic European neighbours. For our party, it’s Europe every time.”

The Rejoin EU Party is campaigning to re-join the EU because we believe re-joining is the only way to solve the multiple problems Brexit has created. Brexit is broken and it’s breaking our country too. All the promises on which Brexit was sold to the electorate in 2016 were nonsense. Far from reducing red tape and providing £350m a week for the NHS, Brexit makes trading with the crucial European market more complex, difficult and expensive and threatens to reduce funding for public services. If you agree Brexit is making our country poorer, less tolerant and less united, join us and send a message to Westminster that you want your EU membership back, with all its freedoms and benefits.
