Former Conservative MEP to stand for Rejoin EU Party in Runcorn & Helsby
Former Conservative MEP John Stevens is to stand as the Rejoin EU Party’s candidate in the Runcorn & Helsby by-election on May 1st, the party has announced.
Stevens is standing to offer the voters of the constituency a clear, pro-European alternative to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and the main Westminster parties, most of whom openly support Brexit or refuse to acknowledge that the only way to end the chaos leaving the EU has caused is to re-join as soon as possible.
Stevens said re-joining would give the economy and public services an immediate financial boost, thereby avoiding the need for Labour’s tax increases and spending cuts.
It would also help the UK to combat Trump’s trade tariffs – now largely delayed – by becoming part of a bigger trading bloc, with all the extra negotiating clout that would provide.
“I want to give voters in Runcorn & Helsby a choice that the main parties refuse to offer. A chance to lift the economy and get the UK back on track,” Stevens said.
Rejoin EU Party leader Brendan Donnelly said of Trump’s decision to ‘pause’ reciprocal tariffs on most countries apart from China: “The hope that Brexit Britain would benefit from a lower Trump tariff than that imposed on the EU rapidly proved itself to be a mirage.”

Best of luck. The UK’s best future is as a participant in the EU, which is the most advanced democracy there has ever been. As Richard Woolf has said on Youtube, China is coming up and the US going down. Personally I see India, Africa and South America as emerging slowly and Russia as an ongoing catastrophe. So, as the world shakes itself into large political/economic blocs, our best place is our natural place, in the EU.
John Stevens was an excellent MEP and has a brilliant and incisive brain: he is also a linguist. His commitment to the European cause is lifelong and very strong. Following Brexit he has been a foremost campaigner for Rejoin and he would make an excellent MP for Runcorn and Helsby. As the Leader of the Conservative Group of MEPs 1997-2001, I trusted John completely
