Boris Johnson’s downfall has been received as a reason for hope in Brussels and Dublin, with relations between the UK and the EU at a historic low point under his premiership.

There was a dearth of the usual diplomatic platitudes from world capitals for an outgoing leader with leaders in Europe instead calling for reset in the deeply troubled relationships.
