Many of us, including many Labour Party supporters, hoped Labour was staying silent on Brexit simply to defeat the Conservatives – and would then reverse it. This latest revelation is the nail in the coffin – even pollsters are warning that Starmer has gone too far.
Good politicians know when to be flexible and when to stick to their guns. With Starmer, it’s the other way round. He thought making Eurosceptic noises and happily abandon his moderate pro-Europeanism was a good way to win the next election. This may have been a cynically rational stance at the time, but now it is simply counter-productive as more and more voters see the failure of Brexit.
As the Conservatives claim with ever growing implausibility that Starmer is plotting to rejoin the EU, Starmer tries to contradict them by intensifying his Eurosceptic rhetoric, precisely at the point at which he should be dialling it down. People aren’t accepting the Brexit rhetoric anymore – but Starmer can’t see it. It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic for the country.
Brexit has failed – even Farage admits it – but the only parties still haplessly refusing to acknowledge this increasingly widely accepted reality are Labour and the Tories.
The Rejoin EU Party wants to make it clear that it would welcome with open arms the support of the many Remainers and Labour Party supporters disillusioned by Starmer’s conversion to Brexit. Unlike Labour, we will oppose Brexit vigorously and with the full courage of our convictions that Brexit has failed and should be ended. Our Labour friends don’t have to give up their party membership to join us – everyone who knows Brexit can’t be made to work is welcome. Join us now and let’s ditch Brexit.
