Half-baked Brexit deal threatens to take British fine dining off the table
In the heart of London's Mayfair, an Anglo-French culinary haven founded 56 years ago is set to close – partly because of Brexit. Le Gavroche has been an emblem of excellence since its inception in 1967. Founded by the visionary Roux brothers, Albert and Michel Sr., and nurtured under Michel Jr.'s guidance since 1991, it has woven an indelible tapestry into our cultural landscape. But Brexit has taken another stab at that contribution to our cultural heritage. Due to rising costs and labour shortages caused by the fateful 2016 vote and shambolic deal cooked up by Boris Johnson, we risk losing more of it.
This isn't just a loss for those able to enjoy fine French dining. Le Gavroche isn't merely a restaurant; it's a bastion of culinary evolution, where icons like Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White forged their careers. It’s about much more than Mayfair.
Roux Jr. reportedly said the consequences of the UK’s split with Europe had made things extremely difficult for his business.
“Brexit has put a huge spanner in the works in terms of supplies, staffing and costs,” he told The Times.
Brexit, with its tangle of red tape, disruption and unforeseen problems, has pushed our hospitality sector into deep water. Supply chains have faltered, staffing struggles have intensified and costs have soared. Le Gavroche's impending demise shows Brexit is an assault on our culture as well as our economy.
In September, the Rejoin EU Party will join the National Rejoin March. Walking through the streets of London won't put a dent in the side of Brexit by itself. The march will be a critical day for us to recruit more supporters and intensify our campaign to apply serious pressure on politicians to end Brexit. The only way to do that is at the ballot box. It’s how Nigel Farage did it.
